Patrick Crowley reviewed: Stained glass weekly classes in Sheffield (South Yorkshire)

"Update 2024: Another weekly stained glass course completed successfully, and I am very pleased with the Art Deco Tiffany lightshade that I made this time. The course has allowed me to build solidly on the skills that I learned in previous courses. This project involved a lot of pieces of glass and it really made me realise how these courses have helped me grow my glass cutting skills. Kate and Martin are excellent tutors and are always approachable for any questions during classes. On the Friday afternoon courses, even if not asked, Kate regularly checks on students progress. In this way she caught a (somewhat basic!) mistake that I was about to make when soldering my latest work :-) The atmosphere in the classes is always friendly, industrious and creative. It is great to see and be inspired by the other students work, gain tips and bounce ideas around. I was especially pleased on this course with the steady introduction of the new improved glass grinders, illustrating that Martin is always investing in his workshops with the latest kit to ensure efficient and up to date skills learning. I would gladly recommend anyone to give learning stained glass at Martin McAsseys workshop a try. "

Martin McAssey Glass responded:

"Thank you for the great review."

Tim Nixon reviewed: Beginners bowl carving

"Just finished the two day bowl making course and I'm please to say that I now have a nice looking usable wooden bowl. Nick is an excellent tutor, very knowledgeable and patient and very good company to boot. I struggle a bit with energy levels and some of the early work is a little strenuous but there is a lot of encouragement and a little bit of help available if needed to ensure you go home with a bowl that you will be proud of. Can't recommend the course enough. I have now been on the spoon and bowl carving courses and will definitely be going back again."

Gosman Spoon Co. responded:

"Thank you Tim! We’re looking forward to seeing you again. In the meantime if you have any questions or need some help on tools, please just message me."

Pip Carr reviewed: Watercolour for improvers; developing further skills

"I have done several courses with Sarah and each one has been excellent, including this one. The lessons are very well structured, with a printable handout with instructions and also comprehensive You Tube videos, where Sarah shows you exactly step by step how to approach the technique she is teaching. She provides detailed, constructive and encouraging feedback on your paintings. This course included lessons on pen and wash techniques which I particularly enjoyed learning and which has opened up a whole new world of possibilities. I cannot recommend Sarah and her courses highly enough."

Sarah Colgate responded:

"Thank you, Pip, for your review. I am glad you enjoyed this course and found the course materials and feedback useful throughout all the watercolour courses. Great to hear that you found the pen and wash sessions inspiring and a subject you can explore further. Sarah"

Peter White reviewed: Make a leather belt in an evening - Craft it Yourself Practical Leather Course

"I was given this course as a gift having expressed an interest in leather crafts. This belt making course was an excellent introduction. The tutor was knowledgeable, helpful and friendly. She is also keen that you make your belt yourself and does not take over or interfere but advises first and assists only if you stray too far and then only to get you back on track. She also provides plenty of off cuts for you to practice and get a feel for each technique before putting a tool on the belt you are making. At the end of the day you walk away with a high quality bespoke leather belt- something to be considered when weighing up the cost. Leather goods and equipment are available to purchase should you so wish but no pressure selling is employed. A great half day course, a terrific tutor and superb introduction to leather crafting. "

It was a very enjoyable day and we all left with usable items we had made."

Nikki King reviewed: Colour from Plants - An Introduction to Natural Dyeing

"A relaxing and well paced course with enough content for someone who has already dabbled with natural dyeing as familiar and new ideas / concepts were learnt. Kendall was very welcoming and informative, we had really good discussions related to the course and other similar crafts. I think having a little more space to arrange fabrics / wool would have been more helpful when organising them for the modifier and then organising once dyeing had finished. Also looking at how to keep them arranged for taking home especially because they were still wet. Overall a very good experience. "

Jayne M reviewed: Gelli Plate Printing - Experimenting with Image transfer with Clare Cosens

"An informative and fun couple of hours. Clare shared her knowledge and experience, allowing us to play and achieve satisfying progress and prints with this tricky image transfer technique, that none of us had been successful in achieving by ourselves. It was satisfying and I left with the confidence to play and try some more. "

Clare Cosens Designs responded:

"I'm so pleased to hear that you came away from my workshop with the confidence to try again at home. Your prints looked amazing, I loved the the combination of colours that you used. Feel free to send pictures of future prints, I love to see how people get on. Happy Printing!"

Polly Taylor reviewed: Plaster mould making for slip cast ceramics with Ed Bentley

"I am doing research into setting up a pottery abroad and I went to Ed to get more of an idea of what was involved in creating moulds for slipware. I had a great day learning so much in Ed's studio - all very relaxed and Ed was very patient explaining the steps on how to go about it and gave me great tips and pointers, with lots of examples on his shelves to illustrate what he meant. We turned a small bowl out of plaster on the lathe as the first part of the mould- making process. If only I had more days to hand to spend with Ed - I will certainly be back once I have got things up and running. I can highly recommend this course. "
