Introduction to Greenwood Spoon Carving- Beginners Eating Spoon
Description
Learn the traditional craft of spoon carving in the ancient woodland setting of Ecclesall Woods in Sheffield. Spoon carving is an easily accessible and portable craft, requiring only a few basic hand tools and small amounts of wood. The tactile nature, the natural materials used and the focus of attention involved all combine to make a great exercise in mindfulness. Starting with a spoon blank, freshly cut from the local woodland, you will be guided through the process of carving your own eating spoon using straight and hooked knives to create your own unique eating spoon. You can choose from a range of shapes and styles to individualise your spoon, and learn about different ways to decorate your spoon at home. You will learn: -A simple guide to sourcing and selecting suitable wood -Why we carve green wood, its properties and uses -How to safely use spoon carving knives -The basics of tool sharpening and its importance in safe and effective carving -Tips and tools for continuing your carving at home. Please be aware that this workshop does NOT involve axe work, but this can be demonstrated during the day. If you would like to learn how to axe out your own spoon blank, you may prefer to do the Beginners’ Cooking Spoon workshop. All wood and tools are provided, but feel free to bring your own tools if you wish. PLEASE NOTE: This activity requires good hand mobility and may not be suitable if you have arthritis or other hand pain. The workshop involves using extremely sharp tools in a woodland setting. Responsible practice of participants and regard for the safety of yourself and others is essential. Over 18s only. Please wear suitable clothing and footwear - long trousers and substantial shoes/boots. Safety gloves will be available for any participants who may wish to use them.
