Enjoy a full day improving your spoon carving skills in our woodland workshop in Ecclesall Woods. This course is for people who have already made a few first spoons using a carving axe and carving knives, and would like to improve their axe and knife skills (if you have not previously done any spoon carving or axe work, please see our 'beginners’ cooking spoon' course). You will start your spoon from the log and go through the whole process of creating a cranked eating spoon. The day can be guided by any particular techniques you would like to try or troubleshooting technical issues that you might want to address. We will discuss topics such as sourcing and selecting suitable wood, safe axe and knife skills, spoon design features, grain direction, tools and tool sharpening, finishing methods and decorating styles. You are welcome to bring any spoons you have already made if you would like help to finesse them. It’s also great to compare first spoons to see your progress. You may find it useful to bring a notebook and pencil. All wood and tools are provided, but you are welcome to bring any of your own tools if you wish. PLEASE NOTE: This is an energy intensive workshop using extremely sharp tools in a woodland setting. Responsible practice of participants and regard for the safety of yourself and others is essential. - Over 18s only. - Please wear suitable clothing and footwear - long trousers and substantial shoes/boots. - Safety gloves will be available for any participants who may wish to use them. Please inform the course tutor if you have any specific health conditions, restrictions or allergies.

- All materials and tool use are provided for you on the day. - Refreshments throughout the course. - Please bring a packed lunch, notebook and pen. PPE is available where applicable. All green woodworking courses are based outside. Most other courses inside based but bring clothing/footwear/sunscreen, etc. Suitable to working outdoors in the season you attend. The Coffee Stop Cafe will be open for lunch and snacks (with vegan options), or you may prefer to bring a packed lunch. - There are toilets on site. - Parking is available.
