Introduction to Greenwood Spoon Carving- Beginners Cooking Spoon
Description
Learn the traditional craft of spoon carving in the ancient woodland setting of Ecclesall Woods in Sheffield. Spoon carving is an easily accessible and portable craft, requiring only a few basic hand tools and small amounts of wood. The tactile nature, the natural materials used and the focus of attention involved, all combine to make a great exercise in mindfulness. Working with a freshly cut greenwood billet, you will learn how to use a carving axe to shape the billet down to size. Then you will refine the shape using a straight knife and a hook knife, resulting in your own unique cooking spoon. You will learn: - A simple guide to selecting wood for spoon carving. - Why we carve green wood, its properties and uses. - How to safely use a carving axe and spoon carving knives. - The basics of tool sharpening and its importance in safe and effective carving. - Tips and tools for continuing your carving at home. If you would prefer to make an eating spoon or you are not keen on using an axe, we also offer a 'beginners’ eating spoon' workshop which concentrates on knife skills. All tools and wood are provided, but feel free to bring your own tools if you wish. PLEASE NOTE: This activity requires good hand mobility and may not be suitable if you have arthritis or other hand pain. It is an energy intensive workshop using extremely sharp tools in a woodland setting. Responsible practice of participants and regard for the safety of yourself and others is essential. Over 18s only. Please wear suitable clothing and footwear - long trousers and substantial shoes/boots. Safety gloves will be available for any participants who may wish to use them. Please inform the course tutor via the 'message the tutor' button if you have any specific health conditions, restrictions or allergies. The Coffee Stop Café will be open for lunch and snacks (with vegan options), or you may prefer to bring a packed lunch.
