Maker's bio

I'm Richard, a traditionally trained blacksmith with a passion for ironwork. I trained at Hereford's National School of Blacksmithing which gave me an excellent start into the world of forging metal. I moved to Yorkshire to be close to family and start my own business, which has given me the opportunity to offer classes so that others can have a taste of what it is like to be a blacksmith. Some examples of what can be made in the class can be seen in the gallery.

Gary Maddison reviewed: Blacksmithing Experience in Grassington (3 hours)

"Had a great day, Richard was very knowledgable and couldn’t have done more for us. The drinks and snacks that were provided were a nice touch. Managed to make a bottle opener and a knife. Would absolutely come back."

"What a great course! Richard was very welcoming, helpful and knowledgeable, ably assisting me in my choice of design and creation of my piece of metalwork. He worked with me, rather than doing it for me…perfect! And my wife was suitably impressed with the candlestick holder. I would highly recommend!!"

Becky Lenihan reviewed: Sword Making Workshop in Grassington

"We did the sword crafting workshop for two people. This was one of the best days out I've had in a long time and would highly recommend! Richard was a great and patient instructor. He gave us the opportunity to help design our swords with inspiration photos and discussed the options and the skills and time required to help select the best option. The design of the workshop allowed us to try out different approaches and skills, including woodworking on the handles, in a safe and supportive learning environment. Throughout the process, he struck the balance really well between helping us be as independent as possible in working on the swords, whilst providing supervision and assistance where required. This meant that we came away feeling like we had put the work into making something and trying a new skill, but also with a final product to show for it that we were happy with and are now proudly displayed in our home. Richard was so patient and friendly and we are so grateful for him for such a great day (although our muscles are still aching a week later from all the hard work)! I have recommended this workshop to all my friends and family and would definitely consider coming back for the half day experience in the future!"

"A truly fantastic experience. This was a Christmas treat for my husband and 3 teenage sons. They had a brilliant day, the experience was better than they imagined, they have learned new skills and enjoyed every second. All commented on how well Richard planned the day, enabling each of then to make the sword they had in mind. 3 days on, and, despite the blisters from using a hammer all day, they are all talking about how much fun they had and what they will make next time! Thank you. "
