Gareth Jeremy reviewed: Pen Making Course (1/2 day)

"I booked this course on behalf of my grandmother who is 93 years old. Derek was extremely friendly, welcoming, helpful and knowledgable. The course lasts for three hours in which time we had plenty of time to watch Derek make a beautiful pen and to make one too. We had some difficulties with the pen assembly and Derek jumped in to sort it out and we left very happy. I would advise people to wrap up warm as it is a bit chilly in the workshop, especially when the dust extractor is on, and to take a bottle of water. We had time to stop for a coffee half way through the course but would have been happier if we'd had something to drink throughout the session. I think the course is great. Overall I couldn't have hoped for anything more - thank you Derek - fully recommended for absolutely anybody. May well be back to turn some bowls."

Assynt Pens responded:

"Thank you Gareth. Yea and coffee on tap is a great idea, and I’ll take steps to make sure that’s available. Plus biscuits!! Glad Jenny enjoyed her time with me."

Lucy reviewed: Weaving: the journey begins

"I really enjoyed this one-day course. It’s very much “learning by doing” and Ashleigh is a superb teacher. He gave clear explanations and talked me through a variety of patterns and yarns. I could go at my own pace and had plenty time to practise and consolidate one type of weaving before going on to the next. Ashleigh struck the right balance between showing me what to do and letting me get on with it, and I quickly gained more confidence. As a complete novice, it was a great feeling to come away with a finished piece of work that I’m proud of. The workshop has a cosy friendly atmosphere and is really inspiring. "

Tartan Caledonia responded:

"Thank you for the kind words, glad you enjoyed you day. Ashleigh."

Helen reviewed: Create a pebble mosaic garden feature with award winning artist David James in Ilkley

"I learnt so much on this course and now have the confidence to make more mosaics of my own. The process is magical. I brought some of my own stones that the kids had collected to add a personal touch. You don’t need to be artistic. The steps are kept simple and help is always to hand. Very relaxing and therapeutic- carefully placing each stone. And the end result brilliant. I would thoroughly recommend anyone giving it a go. "

Michelle reviewed: Beginners half-day pairs pottery / ceramics workshop

"This is a great workshop for anybody who wants to try out pottery. Louise was very welcoming and after a cup of coffee we felt very relaxed and ready to go. We started getting used to the clay by making pinch pots and then Louise patiently guided us through the process of making vases using the slab method. Louise had a variety of materials and suggestion which we used to create different decorative effects. We had great fun trying these out and adding our own ideas. And then we tried the wheel. We knew that throwing clay is a difficult art to master but wanted to give it a go. Louise gave us very good instructions, so we managed to see a lump of clay taking on some shape. I admit that my daughter was more successful than me, but it was great to try it. It was a great experience and we enjoyed it a lot. Louise is such a great and supportive teacher. I am sure we will be back. "

Blended Monkey - pottery - woodturning - green woodworking - pole lathe - throwing responded:

"Thank you for your lovely review Michelle :-). It was a delight having you and your daughter in the pottery studio - I've shown several students the rabbit vase; such a lovely piece! You both managed the wheel really well, despite your trepidation ;-) and it would be a pleasure to have you both back in the studios in the future. "
