Description

This course is suitable for beginners, and especially those wishing to explore basketry techniques later on. To make these large and impressive sculptures for walls or fences inside or outside, you will create a “slath” in which to weave to create the head of the flower. This is the same as you would do to make a basket base, so you will be developing some useful basket making skills. Once the head is made, petals are added and there is a choice of styles that can be applied. A plaiting technique is used to create the stem, and a figure of 8 weave to make the leaves. This course pulls many key willow weaving techniques onto one compact space. Such a good experience to develop your willow weaving techniques.

FAQs

Refreshments are provided to keep your energy up during the day, with chocolate always being a must. There will be some form of drink available in the room, even if that is just a jug of water. This is a café venue that serves a range of hot and cold drinks and menu of mid day meals, which are available for purchasing at any time during the day.

Generally speaking you do not need a lot of physical strength to weave with willow, but some making activities have more tension than others. This activity does not put a great strain on the hands. However, if you have particular medical conditions that affect the hands and wrists such as arthritis, you will find this more difficult than most people. It depends on the severity of your condition. I have had many people weaving who have reported that they suffer with this. Some completed the weaving without a problem, some have had me help out at certain points (which I am very willing to do) and one or two have stopped midway as it has become too uncomfortable to continue.

You might have some suitable material growing in your garden that you might want to incorporate into your weaving (such as some slender Cornus or suitable vines). Feel free to bring small amounts of something like this along, but be prepared to take advice on what may or not be suitable.

All the tools you will need to complete the obelisk will be provided, but if you have your own tools that you use on projects to like these, feel free to bring them along, e.g. secateurs or bodkins.

Justice walk car park is only around 100 yards from the venue and the best parking spot to put into your SatNav.
