Description
This willow weaving basketry course offers the perfect introduction to basket making and is suitable for complete beginners. You will make a small basket ideal for collecting small items harvested from the garden or foraged from the woodlands or hedgerow. The basket is around 6 inches at the base and some 4-5 inches high. The basket is begun with a slath ( a star like frame) and into this you weave the base of the basket. Sticks are inserted into this structure to be brought up to form the side frame of the basket ( often called a cage) This is then woven into to form the sides. A simple border is brought down before a handle bow is inserted and the handle is wrapped. Many key basketry skills are covered in the making of this basket. There will be a number of willow varieties available for you to chose from to make your basket uniquely yours.

Generally speaking you do not need a lot of physical strength to weave with willow, but some making activities have more tension than others. This activity does not put a great strain on the hands. However, if you have particular medical conditions that affect the hands and wrists such as arthritis, you will find this more difficult than most people. It depends on the severity of your condition. I have had many people weaving who have reported that they suffer with this. Some completed the weaving without a problem, some have had me help out at certain points (which I am very willing to do) and one or two have stopped midway as it has become too uncomfortable to continue.
You might have some suitable material growing in your garden that you might want to incorporate into your weaving (such as some slender Cornus or suitable vines). Feel free to bring small amounts of something like this along, but be prepared to take advice on what may or not be suitable.
All the tools you will need to complete the obelisk will be provided, but if you have your own tools that you use on projects to like these, feel free to bring them along, e.g. secateurs or bodkins.
Justice walk car park is only around 100 yards from the venue and the best parking spot to put into your SatNav.
