Getting Started with Stained Glass - two day workshop
Description
Discover the art of creating stunning stained glass windows in this immersive two-day workshop. Learn the fundamentals of stained glass in this two-day workshop, taught in my purpose-built garden studio near the Sussex coast. With only two participants per session, you’ll receive close, personalised tuition as we explore this beautiful heritage craft—one now listed as endangered in the UK. Over the course of the weekend, you’ll be guided through the traditional leaded glass-making process: cutting glass, leading, soldering, cementing, and finishing. You'll work with a variety of coloured, patterned and textured glass to create your own 28x28 cm stained glass panel to take home. Whether you're a complete beginner or have attended a course before and want to refresh or build on your skills, this relaxed and practical class will meet you at your level. You’ll also learn how to visualise and measure up future designs, with plenty of support throughout. All tools, materials, and safety equipment are included—no hidden costs. The studio is a peaceful, inspiring space with good transport links, just 10 minutes from the Chichester Bypass and accessible by train. Due to ongoing commissions and studio commitments, only a few summer places are available this year—and they book quickly. Follow-on private tuition and more advanced one-to-one days are available by arrangement. If you have any mobility or accessibility needs, please get in touch when booking so I can ensure your comfort and safety in the studio environment.
What's included in the price?
I supply all tools, materials, gloves and safety equipment required and a steady stream of tea, coffee, cake and fruit is on hand throughout the day. Please bring a packed lunch. Fridge storage and a microwave can be provided. In the summer months, lunch can be eaten in the garden, and during the winter, I have a dining area inside for you to use. Please wear comfortable clothing with layers and flat, covered, sturdy shoes. Because we are handling lead, this course is not suitable if you are pregnant or breastfeeding. We have adjustable chairs available in the studio but you will likely be spending quite a bit of time on your feet.

Message the tutor“For me, teaching glass is an act of generosity. Each class is a chance to share knowledge, encourage curiosity, and create a space where creativity can flourish. The greatest reward is seeing students surprise themselves—leaving not just with a piece of glass, but with a sense of accomplishment and a spark to continue.” Originally from New Zealand and raised in Hong Kong, my journey with glass began in 1995 during an evening class in Adelaide, Australia. That first experience sparked a lifelong passion, leading me to complete a City & Guilds qualification in the UK, which laid the foundation for a career that continues to evolve. In recent years, I completed a BA (Hons) in Glass and Ceramics at the University for the Creative Arts, Farnham—bringing fresh perspectives to a well-rooted practice. My work brings together heritage stained-glass techniques with contemporary approaches such as lampworking, fusing, and casting. I’m currently exploring the integration of three-dimensional casting into stained glass panels—developing a distinct, contemporary voice grounded in the traditions of craft. Based in Bognor Regis, my purpose-built garden studio is where I work to commission, develop new collections, and welcome students into a quiet, creative space. Alongside my own practice, teaching has been one of the great joys of my career. I’ve been sharing skills in stained and fused glass for over 20 years, both in adult education and through small, hands-on workshops. Many students return year after year—not only to refine their technique but to enjoy the sense of focus and fulfilment that working with glass brings. For me, both making and teaching are about offering something lasting—whether it’s a beautifully crafted panel or the gift of new knowledge and confidence in your own creative voice. Whether you’re new to glass or looking to deepen your skills, I look forward to welcoming you to the studio.

FAQs
Yes, I offer ongoing mentoring classes to those who wish to develop further, whether you are thinking of setting up a studio, or want to learn different processes, these classes are personalised to your own needs and generally are on a one to one basis, although sometimes I may team you up with someone who is at a similar stage or who will work independently alongside you on the day.
On the fusing course, you would expect to make a piece about 20 x 20 cm in size or a number of smaller pieces - I will help and guide you through the process to ensure that you make something lovely. On the stained glass course you will have a choice of two or three designs - this is to ensure that you understand the process before you tackle the issue of designing something of your own.
I keep my classes small. Fused classes have no more then three people, and stained glass classes only two people, this way I can provide you with all the attention you need during the day to make sure you make something really lovely.
