Learn to knit a Gansey at Debbie Bryan, with Tanya. This workshop is for advanced knitters. Experience knitting in the round is essential. Do you have an interest in learning more about this traditional fisherman’s garment and how to knit one? A Gansey (or Guernsey) is a garment designed for Fishermen, often knitted by the Fisherman’s wives. These skilled knitters created intricate designs that varied across the British Isles. They're knitted entirely in one piece from the bottom up. You will learn a bit of history behind this fascinating workwear as well as what yarn and tensions to knit to, different Gansey patterns from around the country and how to get started designing and knitting your own. As Gansey’s are knitted using a particular 5 ply Gansey knitting yarn, yarn and needles are not provided in this workshop. Your tutor - Tanya is an awarding winning knitwear designer with over 20 years hand and machine knitting experience. She specialises in Fair Isle and Gansey knitting and has enjoyed teaching people to knit in various knitting clubs across the country.
