Resin crafting for beginners

Description

This class is ideal for those who have never worked with resin before. During the course, you will learn how to design, create and build in resin. During the making process we will cover: - Mould making. - Mixing epoxy. - Pouring epoxy. - Mould release. - Gluing up. - Flattening/sanding. - Polishing. - Finishing. - Adding jewellery fixings. The course will be split into two sessions during the day. Session 1 (morning) will focus on designing and creating amazing art in resin. During this session, you can create 3 different resin pieces. 1 in a mould, 1 with live wood edges and 1 in a light catcher shaped by you, e.g. a heart, a star, or a dog paw with resin glass elements in it, so that it catches and shows off the sunlight. You will learn how to use moulds, mix, and pour resin and create unique art that can include wood, dried flowers, colours or objects. Session 2 (afternoon): This is all about how you take the dried resin, cut and sand it into shape, polish it and add the fixings to turn them into jewellery or ornaments. For this element, we will have resin blanks for you to choose from, so that you can learn how to cut, shape, polish and finish resin jewellery that you can take home at the end of the session. By the end of the day, you will have 1 or 2 pieces of jewellery or finished items to take home, and the 3 pours you did in session one. During the day you will also have the chance to learn how to use some of the following: - Power drills. - Hand sanders. - Jigsaw cutters. - Speed sander. - Band saws. As well as all the hand tools required to work in resin. The course schedule and the topics to be addressed are merely illustrative and subject to modification depending on the participant's skill levels and the priority of subjects that participants wish to delve into on any given day.

Maker

Scott has been upcycling furniture for many years, but it was only after family and friends asked how they could make the inventive pieces in his home that Scott first started sharing his skills. Over 7 years later Scott continues to host a number of Black Paw upcycling experiences in his workshop, helping people to create their own pieces of upcycled furniture and learn the skills needed to upcycle at home.

FAQs

You’re welcome to take photos during the course, but please check with other students before including them in your pictures. Photos can be a great way to record techniques, ideas, and options—we encourage you to take them so you have a helpful reference when working at home later.

From time to time, Black Paw may also take photos during sessions to share on pages. If you prefer not to be photographed, just let us know at the start of the session and we’ll make sure your wishes are respected.

Black Paw takes safety very seriously and we provide all necessary PPE, including gloves, dust masks, and eye protection. On some of our courses, PPE is compulsory; on others, it may be optional depending on the activity. While we do everything we can to create a safe environment, you are ultimately responsible for your own actions and any issues that may arise from them. You are expected to follow all safety instructions throughout the course. We reserve the right to ask anyone to leave if they do not follow the safety rules.
Before the course starts, you’ll be asked to sign a consent form confirming that you understand the safety guidelines and that you’re physically fit to take part.

Our courses start at 9:30am and usually finish between 4:00pm and 4:30pm.
We’ll have short breaks in the morning and afternoon, with lunch happening sometime between 12:30pm and 2:00pm, depending on the natural pause point in whatever we’re working on.
🚨 Important: Please arrive on time. If you arrive late and have missed the safety briefing, or if arriving would cause a disruption to the session already in progress, we may have to turn you away.

Under 18’s can take part if accompanied by a parent or guardian also on the course (one adult with each child), but only with prior agreement.

Unless specified we provide all the materials, tools, and guidance you’ll need—just bring your lunch, plenty of enthusiasm, and a willingness to try something new!
