Description
As part of our opening celebrations at Oast Studios Kent CIC, we’re delighted to offer a series of taster workshops to introduce our community to the range of heritage crafts and creative practices that will shape our shared studio life. This Batik Taster Class with beloved artist and long-time Waldorf hand work educator Beryl Chalk is a perfect opportunity to explore one of the centre’s core craft traditions. Whether you’re new to batik or reconnecting with it, this welcoming session invites you to experience the joy of wax-resist dyeing - a practice that blends storytelling, mark-making, and colour in beautiful and unexpected ways. This class is a great complement to our longer course in batik and textile arts, which will begin after the May holiday. Come along to experiment, connect, and create something uniquely yours.
What's included in the price?
• A short introduction to the cultural history and significance of batik. • Demonstration of traditional tools: tjanting tools, brushes, hot wax, and dye. • Creating a simple design using wax-resist techniques. • Safe and confident wax application. • How to layer colour and build contrast. • Techniques for adding texture and detail. • Finishing your piece and inspiration for what’s next. You’ll leave with your own finished batik artwork, a deeper connection to this vibrant heritage craft, and the option to join our extended programme in the coming term.
