1 Day Bring Your Own Upholstery Project

X

Description

1-day session for beginners, 6 people max, 1 hr break for lunch. Bring your own project, ideally a ‘drop in’ seat or a footstool, and your choice of top fabric. This is a group session with people working on their own projects, limited to 6 people to ensure that everyone gets attention. I will be guiding people through modern and traditional upholstery techniques, answering questions and sharing information across the projects. The aim is that everyone learns from the collective experience. It is ideal as taster session for anyone keen to try their hand at upholstery, or take on a simple “I’d love to do that” project. Venue: Westgate Chapel, Lewes High Street, whilst there is no parking immediately outside of the venue, there is a loading bay a few doors down and paid parking minutes away. You will need to transport your project to and from class. A few things to note: - Please send me a photo via the 'message the tutor' button of your project, so I can confirm whether it is suitable prior to booking - and to ensure that we have the right materials on site. Please note not all projects can be completed in a day, each project is different, as are the skills, confidence and pace of the student! - Please avoid velvet & leather, too tricky for a 1 day session. - Dependent on the project you may need to strip your chair down before the workshop. - All activity is entered into at the participants own risk. - Everyone will have their own set of tools for use on the day (we will be sharing electric staplers) and sharing the cutting table. I think that’s it!

What's included in the price?

- Use of tools on the day. - Sundries: tacks, staples, glue, twine, calico, hessian, and coconut fibre/polywadding for spot/repair stuffing. Additional materials are charged at a cost (for example if your whole chair needs a complete rebuild back from the frame), and depending on your project some materials may need to be ordered in ahead of the workshop these will need to be agreed and charged at cost. - Tea, coffee & biscuits are provided. (Upholstery is unquestionably easier to learn after a gingernut).

I live in Lewes, and have been running a furniture and textile business making simply designed contemporary pieces. One of those pieces, the birch wood footstool is an especial delight to make, it is simple, useful, light & beautiful. With none of the corners that so frustrate upholstery newcomers, I thought it made the perfect 1 day workshop experience. For after a ‘hard’ day learning, making, laughing, creating you get to take home and put your feet up on a foostool, and say “That was Rounded by Me’.

FAQs

Yes! It's a make and take course, so relax into your previous experience, and enjoy creating in a relaxed, friendly environment with the knowledge that you are going to complete a project within the session (and if you've upholstered before you'll know just how unusual that is!)

That's no problem, I will brief you on use of the tools, and the principles of upholstery, on hand throughout the session, to ensure you go home with something beautiful.
