I spent much of my early childhood playing on my great grandmother's farm, dreaming of farming myself. My dreams came true when aged 13, my parents bought a smallholding in Carmarthenshire. As an adult, I worked in hospitality and then became a teacher, but was always anchored by the work on the smallholding. In 2021, I set up Smallholding Secrets to give others a taste of smallholding life and a chance to learn how to work with raw sheep and alpaca fleece by offering courses.
"I had a wonderful day making a seat pad with wool from Hayley’s sheep. I felt relaxed and unhurried and the day slipped by. Hayley is a great teacher and puts you at ease. A delicious lunch plus plenty of tea and Welsh cakes kept us going! Her smallholding has many animals and we had a tour across the field to see the new born lambs.
Hayley is exceptionally friendly and welcoming and I would recommend this course wholeheartedly, not least to come away with a seat pad but to be in such a lovely location. "

"I loved every minute of this course from meeting the alpacas to the weaving of the fleece. Hayley was so welcoming and generous with her time and she explained everything well and made everything so easy to follow. The setting was fabulous, warm and cosy and the hospitality was great with homemade Welsh cakes, soup and cake in the afternoon - honestly couldn’t recommend the whole experience more…. I felt like I had been transported at weaving heaven. So much more than the amazing weaving experience."

Would love to learn the other types of looms if possible."
