Maker's bio

Rick first picked up his turning tools in 2008 as a distraction from his IT day job. From the first shaving that flew off a cheap and cheerful second hand lathe, Rick was hooked and woodturning was the future. Through watching many of the best demonstrators on the circuit, undertaking challenging commissions and spending hours at the lathe, Rick has developed his skills and style of turning. He has established a reputation for exploring turning outside of the ‘Round and Brown’ often incorporating alternative materials into his pieces. Rick is best known for his off centre and multi axis work, in particular the multiple axis pieces turned on a jig he has developed. Rick regularly demonstrates at clubs and events across the UK presenting technical projects aimed to inspire others to broaden their turning ambitions and ideas. Rick provides training from his well-equipped workshop in Derbyshire including two high end lathes for students to use.

Jacob reviewed: Introduction to Bowl Turning - Full Day

"I had a very enjoyable day learning the basics of wood turning, having never used a lathe before. Rick's workshop was a great place to spend a day, with a finished bowl to take home too. He was great at demonstrating the techniques and clearly explaining everything (inc. tool selection, safety, tool handling etc.)."

Rick Dobney Woodturning responded:

"Thank you Jacob, I'm glad you enjoyed your day with me and took away so much from it. All the best Rick "

Dave Shipley reviewed: Introduction to Woodturning - Full Day

"I recently attended the Introduction to woodturning - full day course with Rick. I have to say it was a great experience with a knowledgeable tutor. Rick was patient and explained really well to a complete beginner like myself on how to hold and use the tools and a lot more besides. He really is suited to teaching and does it well. There is a lot to take in but the payoff is coming away with a couple of completed projects which I feel proud to have produced ( although Rick got them over the line ). So if you are considering a course with Rick then do it you wont be disappointed. I am hoping to get back again at some point. Thanks Rick :)"

Rick Dobney Woodturning responded:

"Thanks for your kind review Dave, I'm glad you enjoyed your day. You are right to be proud of your pieces, you did well and covered so much in the day. I think the expression is "Rick helped me to get them over the line", this is typical for all students new to woodturning. I look forward to welcoming you back to my workshop in due course. All the best Rick"
