"I recently had the pleasure of attending Stef's wooden mechanical automata workshop and couldn't be happier with the experience. Stef is a wonderful teacher. He masterfully guided me through each technique, patiently answered my countless questions, and built my confidence step-by-step until I fully understood the craftsmanship behind what we were creating. Throughout the day, he demonstrated the precise techniques required to assemble the toy, making sure I understood why we were making each piece and the best way of achieving it based on his years of experience, which I then took onboard to go and do all the actual cutting, sanding, and assembling myself. By the end of the day, I had crafted a beautiful wooden toy that my son absolutely adores. The well-equipped workshop, relaxed atmosphere, and hands-on approach made this experience truly exceptional. Whether you're a woodworking enthusiast or a complete beginner like I was, I can't recommend this workshop strongly enough. Easily one of the best creative experiences I've ever had!"

"My two children did the Automata making course and absolutely loved every minute. Stef made us feel so welcome and at home and three children were really engaged with the explanation and demonstrations of how the various mechanisms work and how to build up a variety of scenes. Coming away with a beautiful automata toy was a delight for them which now have pride of place in their bedroom. They'll treasure these toys and the memory for a long time. "

We've spent a very productive day building a beautiful toy. "I have an interest in Automata and my family gifted me a voucher from CraftCourses. I decided to choose Penlan Crafts in Bristol. I spoke over email to Stef on several occasions and each interaction was very useful and warm. I was guided by his expertise in choosing an automata to build which would suit my ability. I met Stef on route to his workshop and received a fantastic warm welcome which put me totally at ease. Once in the workshop, which was very cozy and well equipped, he assessed my skill levels and after a briefing on my chosen automata he put me to work. I was constantly under his eye but not made to feel uncomfortable. Once he could see I was coping with the tasks he set me he would leave me to complete them. During my time in the workshop we talked about anything and everything as if we had known each other for years. As the day progressed I could see that Stef wanted me to leave the workshop with a well-crafted automata which was certainly the case. Stef is a very knowledgeable craftsman with an eye for detail and a gift of passing his knowledge to his students in a way which is easy to grasp. For an Italian he makes a nice cuppa. If you are thinking about choosing an automata course, Stef’s your man. You won’t be disappointed."

"What a fantastic course! Enjoyed every minute. Stef was extremely helpful, from giving me directions to the meeting point that avoided the clean air zone, to showing me where to park for free, just a short walk from the studio. He clearly explained how to use all the tools, how the different cam shapes worked & was very patient as I attempted all the power tools for the fist time. "A really enjoyable day. I was surprised by what was achieved in a very short time. Stef is a great teacher, good selection of tools, good location in central Bristol. I was very happy to produce a working, finished toy by the end of the day. A surprising Christmas present which I would never have picked for myself, but after spending the day I found it really worthwhile and I would recommend it to a person interested in wood work or other crafts. "

"Building a wooden automata (I chose Colin the caterpillar) was one of the best and most fun things I can imagine! I had such a fantastic day with Stef and it was incredibly rewarding to be able to create the toy from scratch with no prior experience. From cutting, drilling and sanding the wood, glueing the pieces together and painting the toy - we did everything. Stef explained the mechanics behind the automata and demonstrated all the tools. He was incredibly patient and was always there to help, show a technique again or suggest a different technique, but it always felt like I was building the toy myself. It was a truly enjoyable day. Stef is really easy to get along with and I enjoyed our conversations very much. I cannot recommend this course any higher. Thank you so much again!"
