"An outstanding and inspirational course. Alan Micklethwaite, our instructor, is a master stone carver and a top level teacher. After a friendly welcome and introduction from Alan and Tracey, we discussed design options and selected from a range of stone options (sources and characteristics very well presented). Alan's teaching style was one of explaining and demonstrating a technique followed by letting us get on with putting it into practice, adding further tips whenever needed. As the work progressed, he'd introduce the next skill to be learned and again step back to let us gain confidence in it while advancing the carving. A great deal of other information was shared through conversation during the day. I have continued refining the carving back at home and it's looking good. I now find myself paying close attention to carvings in stone on buildings with a new awareness of the skill and time required to make them. This was a very enjoyable day and I thoroughly recommend it. "
"With an interest in heritage crafts I have wanted to try stone carving for years.
I had such a lovely day with Alan and Tracey chatting all things stone and crafts. Alan's knowledge and work is outstanding. He talked me through the basics of carving, explained the tools used and taught with enthusiam and lots of patience. The pieces and pictures displayed in the studio are inspirational and he was happy to talk me through these and answer all my questions about what he had worked on and how he got into carving.
I was pleasantly surprised with the amount I was able to get done in a day and left enthused and wondering how I can turn my shed into somewhere to try carving in my own time.
Brilliant value, super interesting and certainly something I would look to do again in the future!"
Micklethwaite Studios responded:
"Thank you Natalie for your positive and thoughtful review of your day with us.
We really enjoyed teaching you, and your little green man progressed really beautifully.
We always think that our workshops have been a real success if people go away with the enthusiasm to carry on carving stone, so go ahead and turn that shed into your carving studio!
We hope to see you again.
Alan and Tracey "
"Had a days lettercutting with Alan and Tracey and what a fantastic day in a brilliant setting.
Both absolutely lovely people with a vast knowledge of the craft, showing me how best to cut out the letters and marking them onto the stone.
I have done a few courses at a few different places but this place is above anywhere I've been before and would definitely recommend for anyone wanting to learn anything about carving stone.
Will definitely be back for more tuition."
Micklethwaite Studios responded:
"Hi Dan,
Thank you so much for your lovely review.
It was a pleasure to meet and teach you, and your approach to developing your carving skills was fantastic, with your beautifully carved letters being the outcome!
We will really look forward to seeing you again.
Best wishes,
Alan and Tracey"
