Maker's bio

Since school my life has been split between the practical and the creative. I initially trained in photography and graphic design but earned most of my money in property maintainance and general building work until I was 40ish when I started making, renting and teaching people to make yurts. I had a reasonably successful business doing this for 18 years until I changed direction again to my current career, designing and making lighting and furniture from wood. I still like to teach and believe strongly that for almost everyone the path to learning a practical skill is through having a go and this is very much how my basic DIY and confidence with tools course is structured. This year I'm trying something new and I'm running some courses just for ladies.

"What a great course, thank you. Matt is a very patient, knowledgeable and friendly tutor and welcomed questions. The location, complete with visiting house martins flying into the barn, was perfect. I had a little knowledge of DIY but feel more confident using tools now and can’t wait to have a go at some of the jobs I’ve been putting off. Please do a follow on course Matt - I need to convert the loft! Thank you "
