Maker's bio

Black Swans Studio is a multi discipline art and design studio set in the Buckinghamshire countryside. Created by Karina Thomas and Lisa Vaughan, who met whilst studying textiles at The Royal College of Art, to share teaching skills and experience from their design backgrounds. Come and join the workshops here and enjoy this inspiring design space; a place of learning and retreat. Monthly classes are presently run in stitch and weave with other workshops planned from guest designers to offer a creative mix of craft and design courses. Our studio is based in the cow shed, one of a series of converted farm buildings at Culverton Farm. This area of Buckinghamshire has historically been linked to the crafts industry. Wood turners, bodgers and furniture makers, lace and needle makers. As you travel around the hills and valleys of the county, wardrobe lane and needle makers house are evidence of this past craft lineage. Our workshops reflect this rich cultural history and aim to keep people connected to these skillfull craft traditions.

Angela reviewed: Creative Stitch and Mend

"What a lovely way to spend a morning. Lisa is so knowledgeable, patient and supportive. Loved learning how to darn properly and to patch using the decorative Japanese method. Would definitely recommend this course."

Black Swans Studio responded:

"Hi Angela, Thank you for your lovely review. I'm glad you both enjoyed the workshop, it's so good to be able to escape the hurley burley of everyday life for a little while and spend some quiet time making. Keep mending! Best wishes and hope to see you again, Lisa"

"I thoroughly enjoyed this workshop. Karina is a very skilled, clear and patient teacher and I came away feeling I had started a new craft that I can learn and enjoy going forward. I am looking forward to finishing the piece I started. "
