Description

Traditional stained glass painting with leading or foiling – 2 day course - not suitable for beginners. Develop the skills of traditional stained glass painting and leading (or foiling) in two days! Our new two-day course builds on your basic skills in the traditional method of painting stained glass with metallic oxides and will result in a finished pieces of stained glass to your own design. You’ll have time to refine the essential techniques of paint mixing, applying, mark-making, stippling, brushing and sgraffito with oxides similar to those used in mediaeval windows and then incorporate your painted pieces of glass into a leaded or foiled panel around A4 size. This course is for those who've done some leaded or copper foiled stained glass with us or elsewhere and have done some basic traditional stained glass painting. The techniques you'll learn can be applied to leaded glass, copper foiling, garden glass art and lamps or lanterns. This is the natural follow-on to our half-day traditional stained glass painting introduction course and isn’t suitable for beginners. The objective of this course is to develop your existing glass painting skills and leading and foiling techniques to create a stained glass window panel incorporating sections of painted and coloured glass to your own design. The course starts with reminders of the health & safety considerations when working with metallic oxide paints and glass and lead. We’ll then cover design essentials and start to design our panels. Your panel can include up to 10 pieces of glass with multiple painted pieces, and will be around A4 in size – but not necessarily rectangular. When your design is ready you’ll cut and grind the glass pieces to be painted. You’ll paint these so they can be fired over night ready for the second day. Once your painted pieces are in the kiln you’ll cut and grind the rest of the glass. On day two you’ll build your panel using either lead or copper foil based on which technique you prefer or have experience of. At the conclusion of the course you’ll have a painted stained glass panel created using a mix of ancient and modern glass techniques to take home! The key stages of this course cover: - Designing for stained glass. - Safely using the oxides. Mixing and paint preparation. - Use of different brushes and tools for different paint application effects. - Firing requirements. - Cutting and painting your glass sections. - Leading or foiling your panel once the painted sections have been fired overnight. - Finishing & cementing as required. - Your artwork ready to take home!
