Description

Discover the Art and Alchemy of Saggar Firing Step into the world of transformative ceramics with our comprehensive Saggar Firing course, designed for both aspiring potters and seasoned ceramicists eager to explore the mysterious beauty of atmospheric firing. Over the course of this hands-on learning experience, you’ll delve into an ancient technique that blends scientific curiosity, artistic vision, and the unpredictable influences of fire and earth. What is Saggar Firing? Unlike traditional kiln firings, where the atmosphere in the kiln remains relatively uniform, saggar firing employs a protective container—called a saggar—to encase each ceramic vessel. The saggar becomes a micro-environment, isolating the ware from direct flame and ash while allowing the artist to introduce organic materials, salts, metals, and combustibles. The result? An array of stunning and unrepeatable surface effects that tell the story of transformation through fire. Workshop Overview Our saggar firing course offers a carefully structured journey from theory to practice: You will firstly make 2 ceramic sculptures, vases or dishes from clay in the first session which will then be bisque fired. We will then learn: Introduction to Saggar Firing: Begin with an engaging exploration of the history and evolution of saggar techniques, from their origins in ancient ceramic traditions to contemporary adaptations. Look at inspiring examples and discuss what makes saggar-fired pieces so captivating. Materials and Preparation: Learn about the different types of clay bodies suitable for saggar firing, the preparation and construction of saggars themselves (including traditional clay saggars and modern alternatives), and the array of natural and chemical materials used to produce distinct colours and marks. Formulating the Firing Plan: Discover how to prepare your pottery for the firing process, including surface treatments, bisque firing, and applying resist or slip if desired. You’ll gain insight into the careful planning artists employ to harness—without fully controlling—the unpredictable results of saggar firing. The Kiln Experience: Once loaded, the saggar is sealed and placed in the kiln. Participants will learn about choosing firing cycles, temperature ranges, and the subtleties of kiln atmosphere. You’ll witness the firing process, experiencing the anticipation and excitement that comes from awaiting the results of the alchemical dance within the saggar. Unveiling the Transformation: After the kiln has cooled and the saggars are opened, participants will share in the joy of discovery—no two pieces alike, each bearing the signature of its journey through fire, smoke, and fume. Finishing and Reflection: The session concludes with demonstrations on post-firing finishing techniques such as cleaning, polishing, and waxing to enhance the surfaces. There will be opportunities for group reflection, critique, and discussion about the outcomes and what participants have learned from both the process and each other. This workshop is for beginners or those that are already on their ceramic journey. 21st August (6-8.30pm), 11th September (6-8.30pm) and 21st September (time TBC). £75 including all sessions and materials.
