Description

Learn the traditional art of making charcoal with the use of a ring kiln. On this two day charcoal making course learn how we turn wood into Artisanal Charcoal Be involved in the whole process from start to finish whilst being immersed in our woodland in the Heart of the Cotswolds! Day 1: Learn how to empty a kiln. Grading and packing the charcoal and ensuring it is ready for market is one of the most important parts of the process, If the product does not look good, and ultimately perform well, sales will be harder to achieve. Once emptied, we will see how the kiln is prepared for reloading. then, we will see how to set the base of the kiln before loading with the wood we intend for conversion to charcoal. Around 4pm the kiln will be lit. Find out how this exciting process works, what to watch out for and how to stay safe! In the evening, enjoy food and drinks round the fire with new friends. Camp for the night or stay in a local AIrbnb. There will be a chimney swap around midnight then off to bed. Day 2. An early start, around 6am....later if you want to chance missing the shut down! Getting up early is key. A late start could mean the kiln has gone too far and the charcoal is now being burnt! Sunday morning is all about drinking coffee, bacon butties, or whatever your thing is, and keeping a close eye on the smoke from the chimneys. This is a relaxed time of the course, time to enjoy sitting in the woods, watching the woods wake up, it may seem we aren't doing much but, that is how we make charcoal! Time for questions and discussions and some more wood prep for the next burn if desired. We usually finish the course around mid to late morning.
