Make a Traditional Three-Legged Stool

X

Description

Spend two days making a beautiful quality three-legged stool. The stool is made using thick ash for the top and contrasting pine for the legs. You will learn how to make the legs into octagons as a design feature. You will also learn to turn a tapered tenon on leg tops, on the lathe. You will also use various hand tools to shape the parts and add you own textures and features. Then you will have the opportunity to use RubioMonocoat oil finishes, clear or coloured to enhance the timbers. The course is about enjoying the process and learning new skills. Making the stool involves a number of skills, such as, marking out, sawing, planing, drilling at angles, basic wood turning and using various hand-tools. You will make a high standard design of stool which has the legs fitted using traditional tapered mortise & tenon joints, which are then secured with glue and contrasting wooden wedges. The skills you learn will enable you to make many items like variations of stools, small tables and larger items using the same techniques. You will have some opportunities to add your own design features. You will have opportunities to try new tools and techniques, many which are transferable in asking other items. Finally you will prepare the surfaces for finishing and you can apply some clear or coloured oil-based finish to all or parts of the stool. The courses are kept to a maximum of 4 people to ensure that everyone gets a good level of support and tuition.

Maker

I am an experienced cabinet maker and furniture restorer and I am qualified from City & Guilds through to a Masters Degree in the conservation of historic Objects . I have a passion for traditional crafts and teach various aspects of making & restoring. I have also written for a number of woodwork magazines, for example, 'Quercus', 'Woodland Heritage Journal' and 'Furniture & Cabinetmaking'. You will also find my regular workshop posts on Instagram. I am a Brand Ambassador for a few woodwork related companies and this provides great opportunities for course attendees to try new tools and materials. I teach from my workshops near Ely, Cambridgeshire and will also be opening a new site in North Wales in late 2025. I believe strongly that our health & quality of life is enhanced by working practically, making and learning new skills. We are highly creative and practical when we get the opportunity. At a time in society, when consumerism has taken hold, we throw too many things away and do not always appreciate materials or nature. Both my workshops are chosen for their location, surrounded by nature and inspiration. We must make better and restore more. We need more relaxing workbench time and less screen time.
