Work of Iron | Blacksmith Forge on the Firth of Forth | Edinburgh | 1-Day - Copper Repoussé

X

Description

Repoussé is a method used to decorate metals by way of hammers and punches. You will work both sides of the metal to create a low relief of your chosen design. The process is therapeutic and offers the possibility of fantastic results. This workshop is tailored for five people and will last approximately six hours. All materials and tools will be provided, the only thing you will need to bring is a design and your own refreshments should you wish (tea & coffee provided). No experience is necessary, but this is a productive workshop suited to grown-ups as it requires concentration and a lot of hammering! The design – use a simple line drawing which you can bring along (print it or have it saved on your phone). Check out the images from previous workshops. This will give you an idea of what is possible. We also have designs you can choose from if you can’t think of anything. We will learn about the processes of heating/annealing, lining, blocking out, refining on a pitch bowl and finishing. The end results are 100mmx100mm square copper sheets transformed into your own personal works of art. There are up to five participants on this course, and you will spend the day with blacksmith, Jack Waygood. He started smithing aged 18 and has a wide range of experience within the craft, from travelling globally, learning from master’s as a journeyman to working on TV & film productions, such as the Rings of Power & Gladiator 2. Jack’s passions lie in traditional forging techniques, structural work, visual art and sculpture, but he is well-versed in jewellery making, tool making and gets a lot of joy from teaching. This is a practical course, and you will be expected to get your hands dirty! However, there is no pressure, and we will work at your pace, Jack will be on hand to help, demonstrate, and give guidance, at all times. Please take the time to read the following carefully: Participants must be age 16+ for insurance purposes but we also stress that this course takes concentration and find its more of a hit with adults than it is with children.
