Description

This workshop will run from 7.00pm to 9.00pm on the Friday, and 10am to 4.00pm on the Saturday and Sunday. Once you have decided on a design you will be working with high-carbon steel to create a blade. You will learn how to harden and temper the steel in order to achieve an excellent cutting edge. You will be able to choose from a number of hardwoods to create a beautiful handle. Knife-making is an ancient skill, and we are very keen to make something beautiful and useful. However we have no interest in weaponry and aggressiveness. A knife is a tool, not a weapon. Please do not ask to make anything other than a tool. The Friday slot is to confirm our designs and cut out and begin shaping the blades. We can do all that on Friday but, if you have some time before, you could begin to plan for it. The steel stock we will use comes in 2 or 3mm thickness and 30mm width – this sets the size limit, which is plentiful for most purposes and our time scale. This workshop is suitable for ages 16 and above, under 18s need parental consent.
