Description

Spend a day at ‘the tiny press’ letterpress studio and workshop, in Brentford, exploring the collection of metal and wooden type and many images in the press’s collection. You will learn the process of letterpress printing, setting type by hand, in a process which is almost unchanged after 500 years. You will be able to print on the Vandercook Universal 1 press, which is the pride of the tiny press, or on one of the smaller Adana presses, You can print cards, a poster, or simply experiment and play with the process, to create a print which is unique. Sheena Calvert – Tutor and workshop facilitator. I have over 40 years’ of experience in letterpress printing, design and typography, book arts and other forms of writing and creative practice. I work between traditional printing and typography practices and contemporary forms, including concrete poetry and alternative publishing. I have taught (and/or continue to teach) at the Royal College of Art, University of the Arts, London, The University of Westminster, and in both the USA and the Netherlands. My studio equipment, including 400+ cases of metal and wooden type and a Vandercook Universal 1 printing press, along with several Adana presses, came mostly from the US, where I lived for many years. The ‘tiny press’ is named after my beloved dog, tiny.
