Description

The ‘introduction to leatherwork’ course equips the student with the essential technical skills and foundational knowledge of leather crafting, offering a skillset base that can be expanded through independent practice and experimentation, or via additional tuition. This one-to-one (or one-to-two for couples/two people) short introduction course provides background knowledge of the craft and explores a range of practical leather craft skills, allowing the student to try the tools and techniques on sample leather during the session. With an emphasis on developing skills that the student can then practice independently, this short introduction course focuses on knowledge and technique over producing a 'finished' product and so the student will end the course with some sample pieces of the leatherwork techniques they have practised during the session. Aimed at those with limited or no prior experience of working with leather, the course introduces a fairly broad range of topics, covered to an appropriate depth (for a short introduction course), including; - Leather types, selection and suitability for purpose. - An introduction to designing leather goods. - Leatherworking tools & equipment. - Health & safety when working leather. - Practical leatherwork skills (including: marking out, cutting, punching, setting rivets, hand sewing leather, edge treatments and leather finishes). The 'introduction to leatherwork' short course is ideal for those eager to learn a new skill or explore the hands-on aspects of leatherworking under guidance and without the upfront investment in tools and equipment. This short course includes a written resource pack for student(s) to take home, featuring detailed tool and equipment lists, supply recommendations, and additional resources for further learning. *** NOTE: The venue for this course is a hired studio space, and it can take me a little time to check the availability of the space with the owner.
