Description
Join Deacon Nikita Andrejev this December for a unique opportunity to study with one of the principal instructors of the Prosopon School of Iconology. Guided by the ancient tradition of icon painting, join a ‘pilgrimage in paint’ where you’ll explore the profound image of the Holy Mandylion: the Face of Christ “Not-made-by-Hand.” Whether you’re a beginner or continuing your journey, this meditative practice blends sacred art, technique, and reflection in a supportive, peaceful setting. For millennia, the Holy Mandylion - the icon of Christ’s face imprinted on cloth - has been venerated in the Christian East. During this course, you’ll learn to paint this sacred image, focusing on the rhythm of the folds in the white napkin and the powerful presence of Christ’s face. Beginners will receive step-by-step guidance and demonstrations throughout the week, with reflections on the symbolism of Byzantine iconography. You’ll be introduced to each technique with care and patience, gaining insight into how the process itself can support inner stillness and spiritual focus. Returning students will delve deeper into the fine details of painting Christ’s face, capturing the delicate balance of his divine and human natures. You’ll also explore the depiction of textile in a new format, and learn gilding techniques using the bole method. This course is part of a three-year series, but each workshop stands alone and is open to all, regardless of whether you’ve attended a previous course. In 2024, students painted the Archangel Raphael (facing left); this year’s Mandylion icon forms a natural continuation, with the series concluding in 2026 with a right-facing Archangel. While the three icons together will form a powerful triptych, each one is a complete and meaningful experience in its own right, offering both beginners and returning students a rich foundation in the practice of icon painting. The Prosopon School of Iconology was founded by iconographer Vladislav Andrejev in the United States in the late 1980s, after he had emigrated there from Russia. The school has been developing its style and teaching methods for over 3 decades and continues to offer courses in North America, Europe and beyond, in person and occasionally online. Over this time a particular style of icon painting has emerged, marrying the centuries-old Christian traditions with a distinctive approach to colour, light and transparency of paint application. Prosopon courses aim to develop the individual’s knowledge of self through the icon in addition to presenting a theological perspective. Courses are therefore not primarily designed to lead to a professional qualification, although technical excellence is indeed encouraged.
