Half day, easy creative whittling for beginners
Description
This course is a good introduction to whittling for adults and children from the age of 9. Please note, all under 18 year olds have to be accompanied by a participating and paying adult. Forest school teachers and guide group leaders can use the course as CPD to learn new creative whittling projects to make with children. There is something deeply satisfying about whittling a piece of wood with a sharp knife. On this half day course you will learn how to use a knife safely to make by making one or two small whittling projects. Working with our hands, being creative, and making small and very individual craft projects is very satisfying. All projects are designed to give you lots of scope for expressing your own creativity. I think of it as artistic whittling for creatives of all ages. By the end of the workshop you will have completed a carving to take home, together with the necessary the skills to continue whittling. Information on wood suitable for whittling, useful tools and tool sharpening are part of the course to help you keep whittling and developing your own projects in the future. My background is in sculpture and creative education. For over 25 years I have been teaching whittling, woodcarving, and other three dimensional arts and crafts to adults and children. I love sharing my experience and enthusing others in working with wood. Complete beginners, adults, children, and experienced whittlers are welcome. The minimum age is 9 and any young person, up to 18 years old, has to be accompanied by a participating and paying adult. The workshop takes place in my woodcarving studio in South Devon which is set-up for teaching young people and adults.

With over 20 years of teaching experience I love sharing my skills and learn from my students. My own artistic work is inspired by the ever-changing and evolving forms in nature and the seasons. Animals and the development of plant forms, are a constant inspiration for me. Working wood with traditional hand tools and techniques is a very rewarding experience. Each piece of wood is different and carving is an inspiring conversation with a unique piece of living material.
