Celtic knot stone carving - a two-day workshop
Description
Join sculptor and installation artist Ann-Margreth Bohl on this two day workshop to learn how to stone carve a Celtic knot. In this workshop, Ann-Margreth will teach you the fundamental skills in stone carving, showing you how to design and low relief carve a Celtic knot in stone. After an introduction to the origins of Celtic knots and their meaning, Ann-Margreth will teach you techniques to draw a Celtic knot focusing on symmetry between forms as well as the weaving of a form in and out of each other. You will explore the space between the two and three dimensions using a range of processes, materials, tools and techniques. Before you start carving your design, Ann-Margreth will demonstrate the tools and basic stone carving techniques so you can feel ready to put a chisel on your stone tile and carve. She will explain the characteristics of a reductive process, which chisel to choose and why, how to create an even surface and show the cutting of a clean edge and how to create layers in your carving. You will observe the outline of a Celtic knot through drawing and adjust your drawing according to the dynamic you want to create on your piece. Once your relief is carved, Ann-Margreth will explain how polishing aspects of your shapes and looking at surface texture to help some forms stand out, dependant on your desired finish of your piece. You will leave this workshop with an understanding of the craft of stone carving and with the skills to create your own Celtic knot design. You will have stone carved low relief in stone.
