Capture the Colours of Nature with ancient and sustainable dye techniques on this one day introductory course on the world of natural dye-ing. “A fabulous course for a complete beginner like me to get hands-on experience of hand, natural dyeing” Jessica Join dye expert Jenny Mercer for an inspiring day delving into the art of natural dyeing using plants found all around us. This hands-on workshop takes you through the entire process, from exploring preferred seeds and plants, to extraction and dyeing, as well exploring some of the fascinating history of natural dyeing traditions along the way. The day will focus on dyeing silk, and will include dyeing silk ribbon samples, inspired by the latest wedding trend, as well as a silk cushion cover. By the end of the session, you’ll leave with a beautiful cushion cover that you have dyed yourself using one of the colours extracted on the day, and a deeper appreciation for this ancient art. Plan of the Day: Enjoy refreshments as Jenny introduces you to the vibrant world of natural dyeing. She’ll share a brief history and walk you through the dyeing process—from plant selection to extraction techniques. You’ll explore a variety of dye plants and work together to extract their natural colors. As the dye pots simmer, you’ll prepare your silk cushion cover using mordants, essential for bonding dye to fabric. Jenny will guide you step by step through this foundational process. Following a break for lunch, the afternoon will be dedicated to completing the dyeing process. You’ll finish dyeing your cushion cover, creating a one-of-a-kind piece to take home and treasure. It was a great introduction to the process of natural dyeing with lots of info and ideas to take away.” April Jenny and student on natural dye course Tutor: Jenny Mercer trained as a textile designer 30 years ago in Scotland and has since worked as a dyer in opera, ballet and theatre companies across the country. Jenny is passionate about sharing her skills and expertise with others, particularly focusing on using natural dyes because they are so much better for the environment. It has been a voyage of discovery for her finding so many dyes are naturally available from plants in her local area, on her allotment, and in her own garden. By the end of the day you will: – have an understanding of process of extracting natural dyes from a range of plants – have used different plants to create a number of different dyes – dyed a selection of ribbon samples and a cushion cover, selecting the colour from the range extracted – have samples and records of your work to take away with you The Venue: The course will be held in our very own studio which is set within the grounds of Old Barn Nurseries, South of Horsham. Our studio is a light, airy and spacious, and just a couple of minutes walk from the Nursery’s cafe where you can purchase and enjoy your lunch during the break in the middle of the day.
